I just use my se530 with the volume attenuator. Using it turned down from full just a bit can remove most of the hiss w/o lessing the SQ much. It can remove all of the hiss too, but I find I'm willing to put up with very faint hiss in exchange for losing less SQ.
I can't comment about se530 vs RE0 but I doubt the RE0 beats the se530 with attenuator unless you demand great treble. It would be more about sound preference then hiss. As I remember having read reports of hiss with RE0 as well, the improvement in hiss reduction would probably be small at best.

Congratulations on your choice of a digital player. I hope that you'll be as happy with your AMP3 as I have been with the two I have purchased (a Pro.1 and a Pro.2).
So far, FW updates have been received via email from Craig at Whiplash Audio, after he posts on an AMP3 thread (probably the AMP3 / Studio thread in his Sponsor Forum) that an update is ready, come and get it. We then send an email to Craig requesting the FW update, and he sends the update attached to the reply email. As far as I know, to date, AMP3 FW updates have not been made available as download links.

I took up some recent suggestions on playing FLAC files.
Using an external card seemed to diminish the pops and ticks, but not eliminate them.
Chef's idea of playing classical music worked. No pops or clicks on an half dozen tracks. The only problem is that I rarely listen to classical music on any portable players, other than my Sony CD player.
The MP3's are sounding good and I'll just stick with them until I hear otherwise.

Sorry to hear it. I do have one other suggestion. If you use the highest level flac compression, try reconverting to flac level 5 (or lower). I remember putting some files I compressed to level 8 on and they seemed to suffer more from problems. I would think that in theory the lower the compression the less processing needed to play it, especially if the amp3 is not 'optimized' for flac playback. I wish I would have been more through in what I tested but I had only had it for a day and just wanted to get flac playing smooth.
If I have time this weekend I think I will mess around with flac on my amp3 some more to see how mine does. I'd do it sooner but I am also quite satisified with mp3. And I have other pressing matters (*cough* Dragon Age Origins and Borderlands) to attend to. Anyway when I get around to it I will report back.

I've been converting my flacs to wav. No pops. It takes only seconds and it makes the size only slightly bigger.

My ipod is not rockboxed and it doesn't play flac. Rockboxing would change that but I have no desire to rockbox it because Apple lossless is fine and you can convert many many files in seconds.

FLAC files are all converted at the default or 5 setting. So no luck there.

Rockbox has a lot of nice features like Zooming in when viewing pictures, customizable skins, playing non-proprietary formats and a very nice user interface (better than iPod in a lot of ways). The only reason I don't use it 100% of the time is because it's video playback is lacking (I haven't bothered to check if they got around to improving it).
That aside, flac is better in general just because you don't have to open up iTunes (which is an incredibly bloated and annoying program). I guess there's probably a way to rip to apple lossless without iTunes, but I'm not jumping thru hoops to satisfy Apple.
