You really should come to Chicago next year. The gear is secondary - meets are the best part of Head-Fi.
I loved the LA meet last October, CanJam was even better, and now I'm headed for a mini-meet next month and the San Francisco meet in August. If they get something cooking in Orange County or San Diego, I'll go. Might even have to head east for the next one in Florida.

Ha! I got out for a mere $990, but with the value of raffle prizes added in it was actually less then $350. I expect Chicago to be more expensive as you need to add in the cost of a few dogs, some deep dish pizza and those duck oil fries that I saw on Food Network.

Yeah, the meets are a blast. Some people might take it a bit too seriously and just talk about what they want to buy or what they don't like, but most of us are there to meet like-minded individuals and have a blast while listening to some great tunes on different people's gear. Occasionally something will happen like a vendor doing something out-of-the-ordinary and gives everyone a memorable experience. One example being Ray parading around in a coconut bra at the last LA meet we had at Dean's house.
It's like going to Vegas. You know you're going to lose some money. Just have a good time while doing it. Money-losing item for many people at this Canjam was the JH13. Others it was the plethora of portable amps. For one guy in particular, it was Dr Dre's Beats. His reasoning, and I quote: "They're for my wife. At least it's not Bose." For me, it's a combination of desire for the JH13 and the g1a (less bassy replacement for my ksc35s). I even got my earmolds done but I haven't yet pulled the plug.
