Any tips for newcomers?
If you live an hour or two away a hotel room is not necessary but would be convenient for you to maimize your time at the meet. I would just recommend you come as early as possible and stay to closing to maximize your experience.

As for "newcomer tips " I would take extensive notes about what you see and your experiences with various combinations of gear, bring music that is very familiar to you, post about your experiences and impressions and try out as many amps and headphones as possible to help you determine your next steps up the upgrade chain.

Oh, and there are no "stupid or dumb" questions so ask away and enjoy the experience.

It would probably still be possible to sign up for Can Jam around late March early April, including possible hotel reservation and maybe hitch a ride on the bus from the bay area right?
We intend to start a share a ride thread for Can Jam in about a month so who knows you might even snag an open seat on a Bay Area Can Jam Caravan.

Yes there are.

Questions like : "What are the best High-End headphones can I buy for under $50?"

oh come on now aaron, the answer clearly is used sr 60s.

my favorite is a statement and not a question though, said by the friend of mine who heard the 650s out of a beta 22 for the first time - "these sound exactly the same as my ibuds from my phone and you spent HOW MUCH on the pair???"

just wanted to strangle her...but i didnt.

ask as many questions as you like, just make sure you dont sound disrespectful to other people's gear, at least not to their face no one likes every single amp ever made, just make sure you convey such feelings in a proper manner.

Lol. Your friend's ears are terribly traumatized by lengths of time with the ibuds from the phone.

Anyhow, do people sell their headphones and amps and sources there? That would be sweet... I would have to bring a ton of cash though hahaha. Also, do we need to bring a source with us? Or should I do so regardless, just in case?

I only have my Fuze and several CD's. No CD players or anything.

i asked the very same question at last years canjam. the event is first and foremost a gathering of people who enjoy listening to music through headphones. try to make new friends first. their opinions will likely influence your future purchases. some vendors do bring stuff to sell, others dont but it is not meant to be an exposition where people come to sell stuff. i might be wrong here as canjam 2009 might be going in a completely different direction but i am only talking from my experience from 2008. that said, a lot of vendors ship these big mammoth demo units to the event that becomes quite a nuisance to pack and ship back. as such, they offer very good deals on these demo units. if something strikes your eye as a MUST HAVE, politely ask them at the end of the meet as to how much something like that would run for you. if they hint at the possibility of selling it to you right there, then you are golden. again, the event is planned to be fun first, a commercial affair, if at all, second.

I only have my Fuze and several CD's. No CD players or anything.

as far as the source goes, there will be more than you will be able to listen to even in the two days there. same goes for the cd's. i remember feverishly burning 20 odd cd's thinking 2 days would be more than enough time to go through them a few times over...i was quite wrong. try to distill your absolute favorite music down to a few cd's - my personal recommendation would be 3 at most. bring copies of the discs unless the cd's are dispensable or you can take VERY good care of your stuff. people invariable lose gear so try not to bring something that has been in your family for generations. a copy may not be ideal but in meet conditions i doubt you will notice the difference.

secondly, listen to whatever the rig is already playing. jp nums said it sometime ago in a thread i forget about. you find a lot of new music that you ordinarily would not have heard of at meets. talk to the people around you about their thoughts on it. if you dont like it at all, then ask the member whose rig it is if he minds you changing the disc. 99% people wont but at big meets, many a times you will have more than one person listening to a setup or have one source for 3 different amps. make sure it is ok with the others as well before you go around playing dj. again, 99% of the people will not care and will look forward to new music, just make sure you are polite to others around you.
hope that helps.

Ask her from at least 10 feet away , unless you are into S&M. Oh, and I hope she is good looking. I mean, if you are going to get slapped it might as well be from a good looking ...

There is the occasional Buy-it-Now on eBay from sellers who don't know what they have. I think a few HP-1000s went at bargain prices.

If there's ever any whole days (to make it worth it to drive there) during which you need help, I would love to volunteer as well.
