Get them anyway, so you don't miss out on the evening activities.

I know listening and learning will be a huge part of the event, but is this a good place for someone itching to buy gear?

It is a great place to hear just about everything available in amps, headphones and covers a lot of ground with sources as well. So you'll get to narrow the field considerably. Vendors can sell gear at the show if they wish bit not all do. This is simply to do with the fact that they do not want to ship in units and then have to ship some back out. All however will take your order for shipment post show.
My advice is once the vendor list is published along with the member list of gear that you make a list of the rigs you want to hear. The two days go by in a flash as you'll get into great conversations with members and vendors.

Why bother? Plenty of bathtubs to sleep in.

If the DXC Store doesn't bring goodies to sell, it's not far away from the hotel.
You should really try to make the trip. The October meet was awesome and this one will be better.

Isn't the DXC Store a Head-Fi sponsor? I could have sworn I've seen them listed on the Main Page.
