I don't know what Joe has done on my HP2, just to know that the simply restore was 1200 US$ and the "improve" was 300 U$ more (1500 U$).

With my pair, Joe did the rewiring and also added some "magic" (according to Joe) compound to the enclosures. I don't know how much the wiring or compound improved the sound and if the improvement is mainly due to one or the other or a combination of both. Regardless, this has elevated the HP1000 to a new level and the difference was significant and easy to discern.
I talked with Joe last night and asked him why he didn't come up with this improvement sooner. He stated he didn't think there was a need until he invented his new microphone which records in unprecedented detail and these upgraded phones make it possible to hear the potential of the microphone.
Personally, I disagree regarding the timing of the mod since it made such a great difference on any recording I played through the phones. In short, better late than never but 10 years ago would have been better than one month ago. As far as I know, there are a few others with this upgrade but most are professional audio engineers. Perhaps some of them will chime in on this topic.

Makes me want to send them to him! My drivers are taught and in great shape. It would be worth the $300 for next level sound.

Would you be so kind to give us some idea about the sonic differences between stock and upgraded one please.

Any idea on the price/time frame of this only tweak ? My pair has a lot of brownish goop around the enclosures, is that it ?!

I will try to "extract" some information about the "magic dampening compound" but Joe is usually very reluctant about discussing this stuff, and understandably so. My understanding is it something new that he uses and not the original stuff. Regardless, I'll also try to see what his timetable is regarding turnaround for doing the mod.

I understand that!
A turnaround time along with a price for this only mod ($300?) would be great, yeah.
Thank you for responding so fast.

More Info on the HP1000 upgrade from Joe G.
According to Joe, the upgrade is a two part process. First, he (and this is his terminology) "rehabilitates" the headphones and specifically the casing/metal and replaces the drivers and does a few other things. Then he does the rewiring/modding. It apparently is rather involved and time consuming. The cost is $1200 for the "rehab" and $800 for the rewiring/modding; $2000 total.
He said should anyone be interested in talking with him further about it he would be happy to do so and explain more about what is involved and then perform the mods should you want to proceed. Just PM me and I'll forward his telephone number to you. He hates email.
Finally, I believe there was some discussion somewhere about there no longer being any drivers available. This is not true. Joe said he has drivers at this time.
I hope the above information helps.

Indeed.
A used HP-1000 = $1,500 (minimum) + $2,000 in mods, $3,500... .ouch
