The bass response is excellent, provided you connect the K-1000 to a speaker power amp. The K-1000 manual tells you to do this. People who jack a K-1000 into a 350mW headphone amp are the ones who complain of a lack of bass.

LOL, I'd be complaining about more than lack of bass with 350mW.
Impedance plays an important part too.

Maybe they were recabled but I looked and I saw a pair go off for $1800 on Germany's ebay. I rounded up, to a college student $1800 is equal to $2000.

It is a really good news, I always wonder how's good a K1000 connect with 300b or EL84. =)

My k1000 is connected to a 300B tube based amp and I love it. It has a very nice tone and great clarity as well. I haven't heard the EL84 but I imagine it's probably good too brotha.
