I'm going to try to get one tomorrow whenever I wake up (probably 11:00 am). No way I'm getting up early on a Sunday, come Wii or high water!
Hopefully I can grab one -- there should be a lot of stock, right?

I don't understand this...there won't be a huge shortage of Wii's like there was for the PS3/360, so what's the point? I saw like 25 people camped outside of my local Best Buy for the Wii...but I still don't see the point when the Wii isn't going to be rare and hard to find like the PS3/360/PS2 were.

Well, yes and no.
The PS3 was supposed to be initially around $2k MAX on eBay but jumped up to $3k because Sony went being a ***** and reduced the 400 000 to 250 000.
Nintendo will not do that.
And PS to Canadians:
Try your local Canadian Super Store.
My parents changed their minds again. I can go get one tonight.

I'm driving down in about two hours to see if Walmart has some available. I'm not willing to wait in line, but I still hope to get a Wii and Zelda TP as soon as possible.

Well, I'm not paying that much and I figure it will be easier than driving around trying to find one because I do think it will be difficult to find one the first week.

Lining up.
It's because of the fact that... there are only 15 units per Super Store.
Thus, less known. Besides, it's Canadian!
Wal Mart will have a full line.
I checked 3 hours ago as they have 40 units and they had 30+ people in line.

my local walmart has 20 wiis and when i checked at 1pm this afternoon 17 of them were taken. My local target has 30 and I saw about 6 people in line at 9:30 (Its going to get down to 20*F tonight) so I'm hoping to be able to go there around 7 in the morn and still get one. If not no big deal; I"ll get one later.

I've been playing the wii all day. My wife works for a software company and they got them yesterday. We got home too late to hook it up but we've using since this morning. The sport package is really fun despite the graphics. Bowling really feels like your bowling. It has the full arm movements and can even spin the ball with a twist of the wrist. With baseball for batting it adjust to how you hold the bat and rumbles and makes a crack of the bat sound out of the remote. And boxing lets you sway side to side, hold up your controllers again you body to block, and punch like you'd be punching someone. I didn't know until today that the numchuck has a motion sensor in it as well.
We also have Rayman which is also very fun and very challenging. There doesn't seem to be any adventure but it's just a bunch of fun challenges that really take advantage to the motion controllers. The sports game lets you choose left or right handed but Raymond doesn't. For the most part you can play Rayman left handed but you just need to remember to switch for the dancing part.
I plan to pick up an extra controller set and Red Steel and Zelda tomorrow.
Oh, the other thing is this is not a passive game system. The boxing really gets you tired and you break a sweat. I can't wait until the real sports titles come out. I really think this can be better than the other systems. I played boxing on the 360 and while it looked incredible, the play was like what I remember from years ago. The wii allows you to really be a part of the game.

But does it feel gimmicky? I'm torn on this, 480p and no surround sound bugs me, but then the gameplay looks great, and that's what it's really all about.
Edit: does the Wii have WiFi built in? I can't seem to find detailed specs anywhere.

I thought it looked really good in the commercials, but the reviews for red steel have been pretty lackluster. Zelda has got nothing but praise, disregarding the gamecube-ish graphics and "same ol" feeling.

WiFi is built in. I can access the wii store but the news and forecast channels are not active yet. You just choice your WiFi and enter the security code (if you use one) using a virtual keyboard you aim the remote at. It's got force feedback to help.
I don't think it's gimmicky at all. Obviously the sports package is a freebie to just demonstrate the controls and won't be used once you purchase real sports titles but even with this sports package, the movements are so real. You do a full golf swing, punching in boxing, swinging in tennis and baseball. It's very believable and fun. I can see having a few people over, a pitcher of beer, and playing a few rounds of bowling.
It got some other features that looked like it was geared more towards kids but is actually kind of cool. You make a character of yourself that's in the fun Nintendo cartoon look. These characters are then used in the sport package and I guess other Nintendo brand games. It saves your skill level for each character and can also save it on the remote so if you go to a friends house that has wii, you now have brought your player info on the remote. So if you want to go bowling, you don't have to create a new character. You can also have them travel through the internet to share characters too. Haven't had a chance to try either of these features yet.
You can also buy older Nintendo games that work with the remote. Some won't work with the remote, so you'd also need to a get classic controller or a game cube controller. I might get Donkey Kong and Super Mario World. The wii also communicates with the DS but I'm not sure what it does. We are planning to get one for Christmas.
Edit: it does have surround sound.
