Actually, whisky can and does go bad after it's opened due to oxidation. The only way to try to avoid this is (as you drink more and more), to put it in to smaller and smaller bottles, so that there is little to no extra air in the bottle. That's too much trouble for me, and I generally go through bottles pretty quickly. My personal rule is that once a bottle gets to about 2/3 empty, I start really focusing on drinking it down the rest of the way as quickly as possible. Usually works pretty well.
Thank you for confirming what I have heard. I was wondering about this, which is why I have not opened the Mac 25.
i don't know exactly... whisky is still drinkable after 20-30 years opened. sooo much alcohol..
the black bowmore is a very special one...everyone who had this one (unfortunately not me) is going lyrical..i mean, it's their best they've ever had. the black was produced for 3 years, 1993-95 or 94-96. each year has 3000 bottles. the last one, final edition, is the most wanted one..perhaps this one has been longest held in cask. they are all made in 1964. so 30<..
in 1994 one bottle costed +/- 125/150 usd. these days you will pay 4000-5000
..once a year perhaps 2 years a bottle has been sold.
Well I guess it will be a while before I run out and buy a bottle of Black Bowmore! That is a very limited amount coming out...
couple years ago i was thinking should i buy an arbeg 1975 or 77,78..but i found them all tooo expensive. perhaps that's the best way, go to a pub pay 25-40 euro for a special whisky, instead of the whole bottle
i really liked this thread, very informative. I actually took one of your suggestions, and bought a real nice bottle of lagavulin 16, which i'm really enjoying. I don't wanna drink too much, or too fast, so i sip it, a little at a time. I mix it one part water 3 parts scotch like u said.
Beats the hell out of anything else i ever tried : ]
don't add tooo much water...just a few drops for every glas..you can taste the difference. when adding too much water you feel it in your throat. when adding a few drops of water you can feel it in your jaws and a bit softer than drinking whisky with no water...to find the right amount of water is very difficult..is better to add less than too much water..i think 1/4 of water is just too much.
o ja, and drink whisky in a cognac glass or better, a special whisky tasting glass..
