Default I want to buy a Volkswagon Bus.

I want something to tinker with and I like camping. It's so much easier to do so when you have a worm and dry place to rest your head.

I"m going to look at a 1971 Deluxe tonight that would need a lot of work.

Does anyone have any suggestions or can lead me in the right direction for finding a camper to work on?

Thanks.

Nice idea, but good luck on that. The old VW bus is highly sought after and rarely available in a condition, that'd be able to evade the description "rustheap".

I don't know that a VW microbus is something you buy to tinker with. European cars are a bit tough to work on, and it's usually another case where the forum slogan "sorry about your wallet" applies. Parts and proprietary tools are expensive. Cost my sister $750 for a tune-up on her Volvo 850.

I love the VW microbus with the safari front windows. Such a cult classic vehicle, of all things make sure that engine is in top shape, every now and than I see them catch fire and burn up on the side of the freeway. Can't you drop a Porsche engine in those just like the Beetle?

Yes you can,I remember one being outfitted with an engine out of a 993. VW Bus's are steadily climbing in value and so the more desirable earlier ones can easily escalate above $10,000 for a very mint example. Parts are cheap and the sky is the limit for tuning the flat 4 for speed.

ilikemonkeys, sweet find! if your first aircooled VW make sure:

1. Change the oil and clean the oil strainer (use a new kit of cardboard gaskets, and copper washers.
2. Adjust the valves (repeat every 3,000 miles)
3. Verify the proper air fuel mixture otherwise the engine will run hot.
4. Replace all the rubber fuel hoses in the engine compartment every year if a daily driver. The fuel hoses become brittle and will leak causing a fire.
5. If not done replace the 4 rubber hoses at all four corners ($12 for brazilian or $25 for german) feeding the brakes, while at it replace the break fluid an check your brake pads/shoes.
6. Replace the transmission fluid w/ Mobil 1 synthetic, you will have smoother shifting.
7. Replace the shifter rod bushing (about $4) and the gear shift rod coupling (about $27)
8. Tune up w/ new plugs, condenser, rotor, cap, and points.
9. Inspect and replace as needed the spark plug wires.

Good luck.
