I closed out an account on the last day of school this year... or so I thought, apparently they didn't follow my orders, kept it open with a $0.12 cent balance, and never sent a statement to my home address. I explained to them I was moving, and their bank was not located on the East Coast so "NO I don't want to keep it open, close it out." But this was too difficult for them or something. Somehow I accidentally must have left that credit card defaulted on paypal, and made a 4 dollar purchase of a used CD.... we'll 3 penalty cycles later I owe THEM $77 bucks and change! If it weren't my credit on the line I would tell them to go **** themselves, this is ridiculous... the only courtesy she extended me was not billing me for another cycle while my check is on the way--I'm pissed!
it just ticks me off... the held 12 cents I asked them not to, and all of a sudden I owe them 80... ticks me off thinking about the opportunity costs... interconnects, vintage tuner, nice bottle of scotch.
if the darned thing was closed like it was supposed to be, the purchase would have just been denied and I'd notice my error and use the approraite card.
clarrification: the 3 penalty cycles came about while usps took their sweet assed time (3 business weeks) forwarding the letters to my new address.
I would talk to the branch manager and point out the errors that the Bank made. I used to be a Checking/Savings Product Manager for a large midwest bank. Adjustments can be made to an account with little problem. You just need to be persuasive, not take no for an answer and don't lose your temper.
My advice call and ask to speak to the branch manager. Have your "elevator speech" down before you call and stick to your story/game plan. You will get what you want.
And if one branch won't give you what you want, go to another branch. It varies with the different banks (companies), but what one manager won't do, another one will. Again, if you have to beat them down, beat them down with politeness (its more effective.)

as the man said though, credit rating is a big consideration! but if it is truly their fault then you have no obligation to pay and can argue your case! (successfully we hope!)

Dam, gopher, sorry to hear about your troubles! You seem to be more disorganized than I am!
That said, you really reallyreally need to be more careful, and watch what you do with PayPal. Just try to stay on top of it, including watching what credit cards it's using to pay someone.
