DHL Sucks
Here is the tracking of my shipment from NJ.
Code:
7/16/2008 4:17 AM ET ROMULUS, MI, US TENDERED TO USPS
7/15/2008 11:59 PM ET ROMULUS, MI, US ARRIVAL DESTINATION DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
7/15/2008 9:20 AM ET RUTHERFORD, NJ, US DEPARTURE ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
7/14/2008 10:40 PM ET RUTHERFORD, NJ, US ARRIVAL ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY
7/14/2008 8:41 PM ET RUTHERFORD, NJ, US PROCESSED
7/14/2008 6:25 PM ET EDISON, NJ, US PICK UP
....The package's destination is PA
Pretty sad, it goes from NJ to MI. My package probably passed me (PA) when going from NJ to MI...actually they probably went around Canada when going from NJ to MI.

My experience with the USPS involves lots more lost packages. I'd take slow over that any day.

Yeah that's the only problem with USPS... no tracking, no guarantees. Otherwise, USPS is really, really fast for how much you pay.

DHL just gives your stuff to USPS to deliver. It sucks.

DHL likes to leave items with signature confirmation on my front stoop when I'm not home, and then claim they've been signed for.

The DHL delivery drivers in my part of Southern California cannot read, so maybe it's better that sometimes they outsource the last part of the delivery to USPS (I think you need at least a GED to deliver mail).
Every time I've been sent an urgent package by DHL, it gets here late because the Yellow-and-Red driver/van either gets lost or tries to drop it off at the wrong address.
One time, my package was a couple days late, but DHL tracking kept listing multiple unsuccessful delivery attempts. On the third day, a DHL delivery person rang my door bell and asked me if I was willing to accept a package for my neighbor. I accepted the package only to see that it had MY name and address on it. The DHL driver had been trying to deliver my package at my on-vacation neighbor's house over the last 2 days.
I have much better luck with UPS. I order a lot from amazon.com, so the UPS drivers know me well. A few times, I've been flagged down by a UPS truck while driving in my neighborhood - and the driver pops out of the truck with my packages from amazon.com. It was scary the first time being pursued by a big brown truck, but I really appreciate that level of personal service from UPS.

Wow- My last experience with UPS was just last week. The driver literally tossed a package at my house and drove off w/o ringing the door bell. Of course, the product (a fragile aluminum computer case) was destroyed and I couldn't refuse shipment since he/she left, even though the package required a signature and I was present.
I sent in an insurance claim this Saturday to get my expenses back and have yet to hear anything. Plus, they slapped a $5 "fuel surcharge" on my prepaid return shipment several days after it actually arrived at the seller. Note that the package was only shipped from Des Moines to Chicago- the original surcharge was $.39.
Never using UPS again.
Edit:
Their service @ the Des Moines depot is quite good though- I had to stop by a while ago after a driver didn't deliver a package three times in a row for no apparent reason even though someone was present at least one of those days. There was minimal wait time and the employees were actually nice to work with for once.

I must be damned lucky with DHL as I've had multiple laptops sent back and forth through them and they've all come through with nary a scratch. But whatever service it is, they usually come in the morning and I miss them half the time as I'm still asleep or gone. UPS shows up in the evening, and Fedex varies. Sometimes morning, sometimes evening.

I have had no problems with DHL.
But sad to see that you have a different experience.

I've been using USPS for a while and luckily no issue yet (knock on wood). But the Express Post tracking and the Express mail tracking is pretty darn good. It is a lot more different than a confirmation number
In regards to DHL, I had a package go from Japan to Texas and then California and then finally to Hawaii. It went to the wrong hub twice and was delayed by 5 days. Also some high end rack mountable server about 7k to 10k came in with one of the server completely open and the box looked like it been through a war. Then the other server, the box was totally kicked in with a huge hole in it. I also had someone send me something via DHL and that box had a huge hole in a as well. No offense to any DHL workers out there, but I've had more luck with Fedex, UPS, and USPS by a mile than DHL.

Pretty sad, but at least it's going in same general direction towards Hawaii. DHL sent my package past me first time then back again.
Looks like it will be here tomorrow, which is 4 days from shipping date...for a package that suppose to just go across border from NJ to PA. when I used UPS for same exact shipment, it took 1 day- like it should.

Not really. A more direct route is Japan to Hawaii and then to CONUS . The miles for the package to travel the other way through Asia and Europe would be longer than a direct shot to Hawaii .
Glad you are finally getting your package soon. Hope it arrives in good order too.

just wanted to put in my story
was expecting a relatively large package in 90274, but they input it in the system as 80274 which happens to be in CO, and in tracking it read that it was going towards salt lake city AFTER arriving in CA. Needless to say this made me do more than just a double take, and I called them up to change it. They couldn't find anyone to do it at the facility, and they "left a note". I guess something worked as it made its way back to riverside and AGAIN went off towards salt lake. Eventually it arrived with a couple broken pieces here and there...
Quite the experience, obviously not on the international scale you guys mentioned but still
