give evan williams single barrel a shot, as well as ellija Craig, both great bargin whiskeys
I bought a bottle of the EWSB 1996 a few days ago and I must say I really like it. I had tried the 1995 before and liked it as well but I think the 96 is better. YMMV
I had some of the Irish Red Breast, tonight -- reminded me of an American rye. Good, smooth, but w/o the coal fire tang I expect of the Irish.
Bourbon, the creation of corn and its attendant sugars. Oh, I'm such a fan. And the charred oak... (I once burned my bed's oak headboard, by accident, w/a candle, and loved the smell of the charred wood so much it would sooth me as I went to sleep -- and this was before I came to love bourbon and it's charred oak finish.)
Knob Creek -- so veddy, veddy smooth, so good w/peanut butter sandwiches. It's true!
Elijiah Craig -- outstanding for its price point. Order w/o shame!
Evan Williams Single Barrel -- what to order for under $40 or so per bottle. Seriously fantastic.

Great thread, I've tried them all except Classic Cask and Maker's Mark Black. Anybody like Weller? It's a wheated bourbon, they make a few different bottles.

I have been a Maker's Mark fan for a long time. I even toured the distillery and have a barrel with my name on it. However, I have never even heard of "Maker's Mark Black." Can you provide any details about "Maker's Mark Black?"
UK Bourbon drinker here. Got to have a sub to this thread!
my favourites (so far)
Knob Creek
Makers Mark
Old Grandad
I tried a Bulleit the other week - had not heard of them before.
if your looking for suggestions on what to try next, go for evan williams single barrel and ellija craig, and some rip van winkle if you can still find a bottle (no longer made, but it was good). of course those suggestions are based on your favorites of maker's and knob, which happen to be 2 of my fav's along with the 3 others i suggested

I had the "luxury" of working on an extented construction project in Lousville, Kentucky where I quickly became a bourbon fan. I have yet to try all on your list, but with your notes- I may sample a few more. I used to think Knob Creek was about as good as it got- until I tried the Baker's. I have yet to try anything that tops that- but there's a lot bourbon I've yet to try!! I'm a newbie.
I used to drink it ice cold, too. The Baker's was the first time I could drink it at nearly room temp. Never harsh and a lot of the delicate notes become more "there". Yet, there remains a balance and sophistication to it that rivals many wines (something I know a lot more about). Bourbon is underrated big time. When you think about how that much alcohol is tempered with a balanced taste- it's almost a miracle.
Bourbon is also great for cooking, too. I know a chef that makes a mean bourbon/alder wood grilled salmon. Placed on a bed of buttered kale with a nice bottle and you're in heaven. I even know of a guy who steams spicy Maryland crabs and adds a sauce made from bourbon, lime, and sesame. Oh, and bourbon, ****ake, and cranberries over venison. Unreal!! Yum Yum!!

I tried that "Evan Williams" stuff once (a tuba friend had a small plastic bottle of it) and found it to be entirely gross. Really sweet, smelled like isopropyl alcohol, blech. The flavor was so intense, it was overwhelming. I gagged profusely and decided that I wasn't a whiskey person.

Thanks for the recs!
Man, this is a great thread Makes me feel quite nostalgic for my other/second home! I won't be back in the States for a long, long time (sniff) - I miss the place.
It's fairly hard to get good Bourbon over here. Jack D is the usual response when I ask, but Makers Mark is making much more of an appearance, thankfully....
I tried a Woods Reserve....hmmm....not sure. Having only the one, I wonder if I need a better acquaintance.
edit/ any Old Granddad fans here? I was recommended it by a bartender in Las Vegas (hi Jimmy!) and loved it...very nice in my noob opinion. Sadly, I've never seen it over here, but my wife brought me my second bottle back from NY. All gone!
