I've tried the Hirsch and I liked it quite a bit. But it was in less than ideal conditions (at a bar w/a lot of smokers), so it's not on the list because detailed impressions were impossible. When I finish off a couple of the bottles I have now, it is definitely on the "buy" list.

It's funny I have looked over Head Fi regularly for the past few months, though never this "members lounge " section. This thread is a good one!
AH Hirsch is a truly delicious bourbon IMHO. Yes 15 year old Van Winkle, Bookers, G.T. Stagg sensational too.
I've retreated from 25 years of single malt Scotch focus in favor of Bourbons, though I must say that some outstanding Tequilas and Mexcals have also cought my eye / palate. Try any of the " single village " mezcals for a unique drink, or maybe a traditionaly crafted mezcal like El Tesoro. Big sigh....
By the way I ALWAYS pour my bourbons neat, and open up the higher proof ones with a bit of spring water. I just won't do it any other way.
When I was in college I made a weekend pilgrimage to the Jack Daniels Distillery. One of the intersting things they told us there was that when sugar and/or caffeine are mixed with liquor, there is a chemical reaction that makes for a particularily nasty hangover. They claimed you wouldn't get sick if you drank you liquor straight or mixed with water.
I think this is a myth, and not true. Among other things, hangover is caused by the dehydratation and low levels of sugar in blood caused by alcohol. So sugar and lots of water helps to soften hangovers. Don't know about caffeine. Any doctor here?
Headphoneus Supremus: Ceremonial old guy, bifocals and all. All the philosophy he can muster can't solve the mysterious double-post.
Picked up a bottle of the Blanton's Single Barrel. I don't remember all the numbers on it. I like it a lot--it is a little sweeter and orangier than what I'm used to (the Hirsh and Booker's).
Still on the lookout for some Stagg--no success yet....

Do you really find the Jim Bean smoother than the Jack Daniels, I tried JB once inspired by a video made by Lynyrd Skynyrd and was enough for me, OTOH I love the Jacky D.....

Neutrality, accuracy? OK, just ask yourself first: Do you certainly know how the recording is supposed to sound? Sorry, but for me euphony is all about!!! Please do yourself a favor, stop listening your gear, and enjoy the music instead!!!
