Not a mint julep fan, but I do love a good manhattan. IMO Makers Mark is the best bourbon for a Manhattan because it has a sharpness and citrusy flavor that cuts through the ice and the sweet vermouth very nicely.
Did you ever open up that port finished bourbon you posted about in the other thread?
Best Manhattan I ever had: Bookers and Vya sweet vermooth. A little inexplicable, but just amazing.

I'm still working on the MacAllan's and Blanton's bottles that I have. As soon as those are gone, the Bourbon gets opened. Unfortunately I must have the world's most inefficient liver. One drink and I've got a buzz. Two drinks and I'm snoring. So, it's going to be a wait, but soon, since the blanton's is getting down.
Edit: I'd also like to say that MM is also the perfect bourbon for a bourbon old-fashioned. It gives depth to the orange slice and plays off the bitters very well. Otherwise I make the drink with Canadian Club.
I like my bourbon over ice with just a little bit of water. Blanton's, Elijah Craig, and Maker's Mark are always in rotation. I'd love to try the Rip Van Winkle but I never see it in the store.
I hear you on the inability to handle alcohol. I started pouring half size portions (25 ml), and I can do about 4 servings before my taste and nosing ability is shot. That's a total of only 3 oz. of alcohol, usually over a couple of hours. Still gets me buzzed and I'd prefer that it didn't. Oh well, it makes a good safety net, so I don't drink too much. And that's pretty much my hard limit, if I go over that, I pretty much feel like crap the next day (last night I drank 4.5 oz of alcohol over 5 hours, and I feel terrible today, won't be doing that again any time soon).

Currently in rotation: Denon AH-D5000, Audio Technica a900, BeyerDynamic DT250-250, AKG K271s w/Heaphile cable, Sensaphonic Prophonic 2X-Soft
Former cans - Sennheiser HD600's and 580's, Shure E5, Sony V6, Sony CD1700, Sennheiser HD280, Sennheiser HD497, AKG K271S, Ultrasone HFI-700, Etymotic ER-6, Etymotic ER-4S
Bourbon is particularly hard on me because of the higher alcohol levels. I hate the buzz, but I love the way it all tastes, especially the good stuff. Btw, we need another thread for cognacs.
I've found that keeping well-hydrated makes all the difference in the world with how I feel afterwards. Always some glasses of water in my drinking rotation.

Headphoneus Supremus: Ceremonial old guy, bifocals and all. All the philosophy he can muster can't solve the mysterious double-post.

There are a couple of cognac threads; one is particular is pretty good. But no one has taken organizational charge as Tyson has helpfully done with the whisky.
I'm still on Scotch, but I did recently pick up a Bookers since it was very cheap at Trader Joe's (damn, I'm a cheapskate!). Very smooth and tasty...and with little or no water at 126 proof! I, too, need to try one of the Pappy v.W line sometime. And I'll put in another plug for the Hirsch 16 which is much more complex and flavorful than the Bookers.
When I was in college I made a weekend pilgrimage to the Jack Daniels Distillery. One of the intersting things they told us there was that when sugar and/or caffeine are mixed with liquor, there is a chemical reaction that makes for a particularily nasty hangover. They claimed you wouldn't get sick if you drank you liquor straight or mixed with water.
After thorough testing, I'm sure that's not entirely true. You still can get sick if you drink enough. However, that doesn't dismiss the theory entirely. I have found that by following their advice, I generally feel much better the next day. Far less stomach upset and no headache.
Quick, everybody grab you're favorite bourbon and try it for yourself!!
