I have recently sold off most of my portable gear and gone back to using CX-300s straight out of my iPod.
When I first came to Head-Fi, like many, I was looking to replace the stock buds. I have since had a Cmoy, pa2v2, supermini3, iMod, E3Cs and a pair of DT-250 (250)s. But I found that the hassle of carrying an amp and cables around was such a hassle that I wasn't listening to music that much. I don't love the CX-300s, they are more bass-heavy than I'd like ideally, but since going back to bare bones I'm listening to and enjoying music much more. I still love using the iMod at home through the stereo or through my cute beyond and A250s, I'm really happy with bare bones on the road.
I'm wondering how many other head-fiers have been through a similar cycle?

I have been seriously considering moving over from my iriver/flac/cmoy/k81 dj setup over to a zune with some IEM's. I think on the go, I'd much rather have something truly portable, simple, and stylish while still being able to keeep all of my music in a high bitrate mp3 form.

redrich2000, IMO using velcro to attach the Supermini to the back of your iPod would not have added much weight or girth and you would have a great combo to drive your E3Cs. I am sure you tried it, did it seem that heavy or big? Dr. Xin's Supermicro IV would make the package even smaller. Thanks.

I've gone through a similar cycle a couple times. With very efficient IEMs you can get good quality and a basic setup. I've been using mostly an iPod or shuffle and LiveWires for a few months now. Portable amp and less efficient IEMs stay at home most of the time.

You still love your LiveWires? More than Ety? Thanks.
1st Gen shuffle + er4. Sometimes P and sometimes S - depends on the music loaded. Very simple, light and quality just fine for walking around with my dog.

Actually if the decision was only made on sound, I'm a bit more an Ety fan than Shure, UE, LiveWire, etc. which has a more similar group sound (but I know I'm in a minority as Etys light has dimmed a bit around here the last few years). However all things are not equal. The LiveWires are much more sensitive (than even the ER4P making an amp unnecessary) and they're customs which are a lot easier to deal with. So it's about LiveWire 80% and Ety 20% when wearing IEMs over the last couple months.

Yup, you're not alone.
When I joined Head-Fi, I wanted an uber-sound quality portable rig because I wanted one rig that I could use at home, at work and when I was out and about. That experiment has failed and I've put together multiple desktop rigs.
I never fathomed that I would go outside without a portable amp, but lately, I find myself doing it regularly when I want to go minimalist -- H140 + Ety ER4P. The ER4P sounds very good without an amp, and I 4 portable amps are not getting much use lately.

This has been a constant struggle with me. I love good sound, and purchased two smaller amps recently (MiniBox-D and MiniBox-E) for portability. My problem has been carrtying the stuff. I have a nice HeadRoom bag, but it's not small or belt friendly. I find my Atrio M5's right out of the iPod with no EQ work great. I do have an iJet so at least the iPod stays either in a shirt pocket or belt, and I can skip songs with the remote. It will be interesting to see how I progress with how I listen on the road.
