I've also been watching Full Metal Panic (gundam suits and fighting, with mostly action and drama but a little comedy when least expected too)
My all-time favorite is Noir (licensed, iirc even netflix has the dvds)
two female assassins team up. set in modern time, and their weapon of choice - pistols =)
-Card Captor Sakura (4.5/5) : If I wanted to hope somebody would like the magical girl genre off of just one show, I'd pick this one to show them. Great series, consistently funny and heart-warming. The card-monsters are fairly simple, but they're usually stylish enough. Only people I wouldn't recommend it to are people that automatically hate any cute things.
Isn't CCS amazing? I give it 5/5 stars, plus it's possibly my favorite series of all time (definately at least top 2). Magical girl shows don't generally hook me, but this one was special - I've collected all of the R1 DVDs (20!) plus a couple Sakura cels and soundtracks. Definately the DVD covers would keep most guys away upon first glance, unfortunately.
Woah, haven't seen anything else you listed (well, I do have the R.O.D. OAV). I've lost a lot of ground on the newer series from the last 2 years or so...got some catching up to do.

"Nobody can take away the one thing I depend on - enjoying the music." - Eric Johnson
Lesser known shows that are some of my favs:
Planetes - My fav. Simply the most amazing story I've ever seen. Must watch if you enjoy engrossing plot, deep character development, with a bit of humor on the side. The first few eps are episodic and humorous in nature and lets you get to know the characters. Then the main story starts and grabs you and never lets go.
Juuni Kokki (12 kingdoms) - Very complex, rich storyline. Awesome world building.
Elfen Lied - Very dark, not for the faint of heart.
Some recent shows highly recommended:
School rumble - hilarious
Gundam seed destiny - not as good as the original but still enjoyable
Speed grapher - premise is kinda strange, almost disturbing but I like it
Basilisk - awesome fights, tragic story
Koi Kaze (**** so far)
About a brother (26) and sister (14) who don't know each other until they are suddenly renunited under the same roof (father's house). They had just met on a pseudo "date" before they learned they were siblings. The older guy is a loser-ish 20-something who can't hold on to a girlfriend very long (and doesn't really care) and as a result was starting to develop a very apathetic and jaded view of life. The brother-sister-will there be forbidden romance tension is interesting and different. Plus I can identify a lot with the lead male (other than the sister bit). The comic relief burden is on the guy's coworkers, featuring a 20-something male coworker pervert-type who is very vocal about his affections for young teenage girls (eh, it could be worse). Really looking forward to disc 2 of 3, but the keep pushing back the release date
Anamorphic! With a nice soundtrack that I need to pick up...
Aha, wtf, I'm not only one who've seen this? It's very strange but done tastefully. If you have an open mind, try it.

Anime was pretty good but doesn't do justice to the uberness of the manga. The story after what's covered in the anime is incredible. I'm up to volume 30... doesn't look like it'll end anytime soon

Yeah, it really is an exceptional show. Only reason I don't give it the full 5 is going through most of the same cards a second time got a little old. Now, if every card had had new or more specialized abilities the second time around (like Fly), that would've kept things fresher. I still have to watch the second movie.

Guilty Pleasure of the Month - School Rumble!
Ah, I knew I was forgetting one! Yeah, I saw all of this earlier. Besides the last episode pissing me off thanks to false finishes and lack of closure, this was also really good. Well, it was merely ok until they switched the focus to Harima (around ep. 8 or so, I think), then it got really good! Right now, I'd give it a 4/5, but I demand a second season for some sort of closure!

In case nobody mentioned him yet: Adachi Mitsuru. He's the man when it comes to romance/sports mangas. Nobody can touch him in the witty romance genre and I dare say not even the much acclaimed Maison Ikkoku or Marmelade Boy. For example, the so often utilized brother-but-not-by-blood romance stories take their roots from Adachi's Miyuki. I think some of his mangas also made it to the screen but I've never seen one. Rough and Touch are two very good ones by Adachi Mitsuru. Jinbei is an excellent short story for a first taste. It's also his most mature work, great stuff.
