HEADPHONE STUFF
AVAILABLE AGAIN Custom-made Ety ER-4P to ER-4S cable adapter: 3ft long, braided, silver-plated wire cable adapter made by MIA Head-Fi'er Daniel P. This should be a better cable than even the Ety-made cable that is now available. Here's a quote from DP when he made this for me:
Quote:
The thinner wire I used for your cable is better than the thicker non-silver plated wire. It looks about the same, but is more flexible and sounds better to my ears. As most of the signal rides on the surface, silver plated is the next best thing to pure silver which is cost prohibitive.
I have lots of the thicker wire and it is good for long extensions for standard phones when the need arises, like when I listen to the TV with headphones. For real listening I prefer to get close to the amp with shorter wire. I did compare your cable to a standard ER-4 cable and it sounded better. (I have an extension Don [Wilson of Etymotic Research] made out of a broken ER4-P cable that I use for comparisons.) This wire is more like the original wire inside these headphones and so compliments it quite nicely. I wish I could get more of it.

UPDATED PRICE Koss UR40: Koss' new addition to the great KSC/Porta/Sporta line. Koss claims they're "closed" but they're really open. Not quite as good as the KSC-35 or PortaPro, but good inexpensive cans, and one of the most comfortable headphones on the market. Like new, hardly used. Retail price is $40.
$25 including shipping
UPDATED PRICE Labtec Elite 840: the infamous "giant killers"

In truth they aren't giant-killers, but they're definitely good for inexpensive closed headphones. Retail price $30.
$18 (including shipping)
UPDATED PRICE NCT Noisebusters: I'm not a fan of "noise-cancelling" headphones, especially if you own Etys. That said, a while back I actually bought every major NC headphone on the market and compared them, and the NCT was clearly the best value. I actually bought two pairs at the time, for me and my better half, and ended up never using one (um, because I bought Etys

). Retail price at Fry's is $49.99.

Technics ST-9030 (1978, $460/orig $400, photo) - Part of Technics' “Professional Series,” the ST-9030's rack mount styling is unlike typical Technics tuners, and it weighs a ton for its size. The ST-9030 is an exceptionally quiet tuner, with wonderful stereo separation. It has 8 gangs and 5 filters and its overload rejection is second to none. In stock (unmodified) form, the ST-9030 is terrific, a lot like a Sansui TU-719, but its selectivity only improves slightly with narrow filters. Although the ST-9030 was apparently designed more for sonics than for extreme sensitivity, it surprised our panelist by giving his modified Kenwood 600T a run for its money in a side-by-side shootout. (The 600T also has an 8-gang front end and excellent overload rejection, and the 600T is slightly more sensitive. Also, the 600T's array of filters gives it better selectivity, when properly modified, than our panelist's ST-9030 which was modified with narrow filters.) The ST-9030's circuitry automatically selects the Wide or Narrow IF mode based on reception conditions, and it usually makes the right choice. One audiophile contributor didn't like the sound of his ST-9030, saying that it had a “hard edge.” The ST-9030 can sell for anywhere from $180-300+ on eBay, apparently depending on basic supply and demand.
