Micro Stack vs. Desktop Amp/DAC

I'm looking into picking up a DAC and an amp and stumbled upon these 2 options. I'm not really tech savvy so I'm wondering what the big differences between the two of these are and if the Desktop offers a large SQ improvement over the Micro stack.

I'm in Canada, so after conversion/taxes/border fees/shipping, the prices of each option with appropriate interconnects (coaxial cable for Desktop, Coaxial and mini to mini for Micro stack) looks something like this (final price will be in range given, depending on border fees it will vary):

- HeadRoom Desktop Amp/DAC w/ Interconnects: $1320-$1400
- HeadRoom Micro Stack w/ Interconnects: $875-$900

So my question is, is the HR Desktop option REALLY worth that extra $500, or is it just a slight improvement? I really don't understand the componentry, so I'm just curious of what the major differences are as far as SQ and such goes.

I've had my total bithead for several months now and it has served me great under my laptop running vista. Now that I have built a desktop with Win 7 a few issues are emerging. Whenever it is idling and nothing is running I can hear a medium pitched tone come through. If I then switch to battery mode it fixes for about 5 seconds, then a static builds up, starting at a low pitch getting higher and louder until the red overload switch is lit.

90% of the time so far has been gaming. Some games are fine, however others, like Crysis, require constant flicking between battery and usb power every few minutes to remove loud artifacts that build up.

Is this a driver issue, and are there any troubleshooting steps to solve it?

Thanks

I'm enjoying my recently acquired ultra micro stack at work, but the amp is clobbering my ER4S. I can't get the volume past 9 o'clock on the low gain. Can someone recommend a line level attenuator I can fit between the dac and amp? The Harrison Labs RCAs from HeadRoom work awesome in my home setup but fitting these between two mini plugs would be a mess of wires/adapters. Will any of the 1/8" impedance adapters for phones work in this case?

I just got my TAH a bit more than a week ago, and I am absolutely pleased with it. First real amp (had a Fiio E5)...
After using it for this period, I do have some suggestions...firstly, I would very much like it if the line-in jack is on the same side as the controls (headphone-out). By using an LOD with my IPC inside a small carrying bag, I have found that controlling the volume is quite an effort because the control side is facing down (so when I open the bag, the line-in side is facing me, and I have to reach my finger all the way down). I had to rebuild the LOD so that the controls face me.
Secondly, I do find the volume wheel a bit too loose. Is it possible to make it a bit tighter (I.E. harder to turn)?
Last but not least, I would like to see possibilities of self-upgrading (changing the OPA myself, for one).
I understand that this may increase the cost (and price) per unit, but I believe these changes will make the next TAH (or TBH) an absolute delight.
Thanks.

Anyone have experience using this amp with the 600 ohm versions of the beyerdynamics?
I have the 250 ohm DT990 Pro and it sounds good (thanks Mike O. for the Max module upgrade) but now I'm curious about the DT880. I think it's worth trying out as another alternative to the HD650.

Website writing is winding down finally, and we're into refining and polishing mode. So, over the past week I've started to blog in earnest, and I'd like to invite you all over to peruse and comment.

Right Between Your Ears

I think you'll get a kick out of my latest post on a very cool little audio acoustics tester and building a cheap headphone measurement capability.

There are only two types of articles that I'm certain will be appearing regularly for the first year or so:

In depth comparative headphone reviews. This will be a review of the best cans of a certain type and price point. The current post is about $100 sealed headphones.

In depth reviews of HeadRoom products; possibly called "The Anatomy of an AirHead" or Micro Amp, or Ultra Desktop. Basically, this is a series of in-depth reviews of our products.

This thread is an opportunity for you to suggest or criticize posts in the semi-privacy of this forum area. But I'd love for you to comment in the blog as you feel moved to do so.

So, here's your chance to speak up and help me refine the posting that will show up Right Between Your Ears.

I'm listening.

I have read a little about sourcing Dac's and it seems the USB port may not be the ultimate source.
What are the other options? ie. Apple has an optical out on there laptops?
Portable DVD with optical out?

The Wada I Pod (thing that can take the digital signal from the I Pod before it goes through the internal dac of the I Pod)
