Pretty much as the title says. Need a $100 pair of 2.1's for Music, movies and games. What would be the best bet? I've only ever bought headphones and laptop speakers before, so I am unsure what the best route is. I'd prefer to steer away from logitech as most of my friends have them and whenever I listen it is bass overload. Also I'm in Australia so some models may or may not be viable to buy.

I currently have my eye on the edifier s330d which pushes my budget a bit. Are these good or would you pick something else?

My budget is ~$1000.00 USD (maybe a little higher). Used speakers are perfectly Fine.

I recently moved out of an apartment and can finally make the move from 'headphone only listening' to speakers. Basically, my head is spinning from too many choices. I only care about 2-channel stereo and want speakers large enough to fill a house with sound and pair well with a Mcintosh Mac 4100 receiver. It would be nice for the speakers to look as good as they sound, as well as also have good resale value. Speaker size is no concern, since they will be placed in a large room. Please recommend the best bang for the buck in my budget range.

Thanks

The title says it. We have a lounge at my school, where around 30 or 50 kids hang out at lunches. The school has a $400 budget to buy a surround system for the lounge. The moron they put in charge of buying the system decided to buy a Logitech 5.1 in a box. Assuming I'm able to change his mind, what should I suggest instead? Must be new, $400 is the absolute maximum, should be as simple as possible (powered would be preferred), and take into consideration that we'll probably be running MP3's off of some kid's ipod. It would be preferable if it was available at some local store. Help me out with some suggestions - I can't let this injustice take place!

Hi!

I've set up my Rotel integrated amp and Paradigm speakers in my office. I've never set up audio equipment before, so it was a bit of a challenge! I used banana plugs to go into my Rotel and the other end is simply bare wire going into the speakers.

I bought Monster cable after reading some positive reviews online. I know Monster has an iffy rep around here...but I went with it anyway.

My speakers are at an uneven distance from the amp. I've read online that you should have equal lengths of speaker cable no matter what. How much of a difference does it actually make? One speaker is right next to the amp, so I cut a shorter length for that one, but the other speaker is a bit further away. I can't hear a difference as of yet. If I redo the one with a shorter length of cable, is it ok to coil the remaining cable? Should I redo it?

The one thing that irks me about vintage equipment is having to use bare wire. I just think banana plugs are way more convenient and secure. My Paradigm speakers have spring clips on the back, so that involved twisting and hopefully getting a good connection in the clips. It seems iffy. My Marantz has older style (I guess) speaker connection, which seems worse off than clips. It seems like these have a higher chance of short circuiting or having other such problems down the road. Am I being paranoid?

Thanks for your patience :D

Hi all,

Hi all,

My set up is the Cary Xciter amp (running a big 5 watts flea power out) and DAC and my monitors are medium efficiency: 87db at 4 ohms. I am in seventh heaven with my Cary set up when I use it with my headphones. Because the Cary offers the possibility of use with speakers, though, I'd like to see what I can do with that. I realize that power/sensitivity wise, this sounds like a mismatched system, but in actuality, it suits my current needs quite well (honestly!). Again, I use my Cary system primarily with my headphones, and in that respect, I think it's world class. (One day, I will probably use the monitors in a bigger space, with a different amp - but that's down the road.)

My fairly high quality monitors currently are placed not more than a couple of inches away from the Cary Xciter stack, and both sit on my bedroom night stand, a maximum of about two feet or so away from where I listen to them. My source is a laptop with red book cd and high bit stream internet radio. I'm in a small apartment in Queens New York. I'm very happy with my monitors, recognizing of course that they serve my needs/situation quite well - crisp, clear sound, even at low volume, and of course, not really capable of going very low bass-wise. I love their detail, and don't think they're sterile-sounding.

The bedroom is pretty small, in a "pre-war" building, say, about 4 on a scale of 10 size-wise, and I don't play my speakers really loudly - they're best now with solo instrumentals, chant, vocals, etc. Of course, weaker with classic rock or large-scale orchestral music.

So why even bother asking about speaker cables/wires? Well, I'm just very curious to see what will happen with my pretty nice system if I go beyond my current two-feet or so worth of 16 gauge Radio Shack speaker wire (using banana plugs).

Any suggestions, speaker cable-wise, used or new, that you think would improve my system, would be greatly appreciated. As for length, for now, I really don't need much more than a couple of feet max - but if longer, as long as any loss would be negligible, that would be okay. I'm curious, again, just how much better I can do than my simple Radio Shack wires.

Or do you all think I'm set up pretty well now with what I'm using? ...

Thanks.

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum...or perhaps even the wrong site...but I need some ideas from the technologically inclined, and I know that all of you have surround sound systems at home.

I am new to audiophilia, but I enjoy it. My first pair of IEMs opened my eyes to your world, and I haven't looked back.

SOS = Save Our Surround sound

I moved back to NY after graduating law school and bought an apartment. After buying a new unit for the tv, etc., I hooked up my surround sound. It is a Panasonic setup, which will impress none of you.

For some reason, I cannot get the TV audio to feed through my surround sound speakers. I know that the setup is right; all that has changed is my source for cable: rather than a coax into the tv (the setup in law school) we have a Fios box. The main unit is connected via HDMI. I also know it's not the speakers, because sound from dvds plays through the system (the main unit has a player). The best way I can describe the problem is to say that, for whatever reason, the tv does not want to send audio to the surround sound; the dvd player sends video into the tv when appropriate, but the tv refuses to send the audio in the other direction. Interestingly enough, the tv and surround sound system are communicating as they normally would: when I trigger surround sound through the tv, it switches the surround sound system to auxilliary as it should. But still, no sound.

I would not be wasting your time if I were not desperate, but this is driving me crazy. If I have to waste bucks on another system my wife won't let me blow it on a set of cans. I am hoping one has run into this problem or can see some obvious flaw.

Any advice is much appreciated. And please

I've decided to pick up the HR Micro DAC and Amp (separately, was gonna get the portable combined DAC/Amp until I realized that you can't use the wall wart as a power supply), and I'm trying to figure out what interconnects to get with it.

I need an Optical or Coaxial interconnect roughly 3ft in length to connect my sound card to the DAC, then a short mini to mini interconnect to connect the DAC to the amp. I'm hoping to order them from HeadRoom to avoid additional shipping/border fees.

As far as Optical/Coaxial cable goes, which is superior? I read that over short distances it really makes no difference, in which case I think I'd prefer Coaxial just because Optical requires an adaptor for my sound card (not a fan of having additional strain on the inputs of any equipment). Is that statement true?

These were the interconnects I was looking at. Will they do, or will I suffer some loss of SQ?

Coaxial Cable:

I have an NAD integrated 314 ; it definitely works, as I have run passive speakers off of it and it got pretty damn loud.

I feel like this may be a dumb question; I just got rid of my DAC (which I thought was the issue), and I'm now running a 3.5mm -> RCA straight out of my headphone jack on my laptop.

The only time my amp will send a signal to my headphones is when the RCA input goes to the Main In input on the back of the amp. I would be fine with this, but none of the amp controls work; I have to turn the volume up or down using my computer.

I don't think this is working as intended, and I wanted to know if anyone knew what the issue could be. It's really pretty annoying.

I have a friend who recently bought and made his own speakers with a DIY kit. I was wondering if it would be a cheaper way to go rather than buying commercial speakers? I have been looking into nearfield 2.0 setup and had settled on getting a pair of the energy rc-10, which I have been able to find selling for around 300-400.

And so I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a DIY kit for speakers, in the same or lower price range, that would either match or be better than the RC-10s both in terms of SQ and efficiency, because i know that the rc-10 are pretty efficient and that would allow me to use a t-amp instead of a receiver, whcih i have no space for on my desk right now.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
