I have used AVG 8.5 for a long time and just "upgraded" to AVG 9.
Machine: XP Pro SP2. Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, 2 Gig RAM.
I had troubles the whole time, starting with install, getting the known "MSVC Redistributables Installation Error." I went through the remedies posted on AVG site.

Downloading Microsoft Visual C++ libraries (per AVG site) did not work, since when clicked, vcredist could not locate the source folder.

I was finally able to install AVG 9 using msvcfix.bat file method. However, ever since then, AVG hangs up during scan. I have found my PC hung up and frozen many hours after scan started. Reboot/repeat always same result. When AVG is hung up, I cannot open any other applications, and restart is the only option. Other strange things are happening also. Even when AVG is not scanning and just active in the gackground, my PC sometimes just freezes and does not respond. All this resolved once I uninstalled AVG 9 altogether.

Now my PC is without an anti-virus program, and unless I can resolve this issue, I will be forced to use another program.

BTW. Which other "free" anti-virus/anti-spyware would be recommended?

The PERFECT MAN

A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by.

He gets into the taxi and the cabbie says, "Perfect timing. You're
just like Frank."
Passenger: "Who?"
Cabbie: "Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything right all the time.
Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happened like that
to Frank Feldman every single time."
Passenger: "There are always a few clouds over everybody."
Cabbie: "Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have
won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros.

He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you
should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy."
Passenger: "Sounds like he was something really special."
Cabbie: "There's more ... He had a memory like a computer. He
remembered everybody's birthday.

He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat
them with. He could fix anything.

Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But
Frank Feldman, he could do everything right.."
Passenger: "Wow, some guy then."
Cabbie: "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid
traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them.

But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a
woman and make her feel good.

He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his
clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too.

He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake.
No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman."
Passenger: "An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?"
Cabbie: "Well, I never actually met Frank. He died ... I'm married to
his ****in' widow..

the holidays are almost upon us, and i would like to share some of my wisdom with y'all:

- it is important to keep your parsnips warm and dry. i suggest keeping them in bed with you at night, and stuffed down your pants during the day

- fill a teacup with used motor oil and splash it on your camel. he will be grateful and will think of you as his mate

- dont carry your money in your wallet. i suggest taping loose bills to your head, and keeping change in your mouth and ears

- when driving in snow, never stop tokyo drifting

- and finally, when logging into headfi, stand up spin around 10 times until you are wrapped up in your headphone cord, say "floponga" 3 times each time banging your head on the keyboard, and pass out.

have a safe holiday season, everyone! :)

Saw this on CNET yesterday. Really blown away by how sketchy this whole thing is and how many legit companies agreed to it. They list the companies involved in this article. I think I have seen this before too, always avoided it due to lack of time, but easy to see how they could get you by only asking for an email address.

Anyway I thought this was worth posting as a heads up if nothing else. It is somewhat unclear if this is still going on or if it was shut down pending the GOVT. investigation.
