I never cease to be amazed at the number of folks who actually think any $1,000+ headphones, can be "so-o-o much better" (proportionate to their price premium) than the moderately priced phones in any of these lines.
I don't think as many people as you think actually think that. Sometimes people buy things because they want to and because, to their ears, it sounds "better" in one way or another, not necessarily in proportion to anything, just better. If they can afford it and figure they won't lose too much on resale, they don't necessarily think of the price as a permanent investment.

Of all of the headphones I own, some of the most expensive ones that I've ever purchased (whether in the new or used market) are each now worth, on average, about $1,000 more than what I paid for them. I'm talking specifically about the HE90, R10, PS-1, Qualia 010, L3000, K1000, HP-2 and a couple of others. That never ceases to amaze me. Everything else (the run of the mill stuff like the HD650, K701, and SA5000 varieties) have gone down in value.

I often asked myself: "Why do you keep buying more headphones?" Now I know the answer: "[E]ventually the ear needs a new electro mechanical stimulus." Thanks WarriorAnt. I needed that!
