I haven't tried it, but it should work without a problem.
Now, "improving" the sound is subjective, but tubes will change the sound in a certain way which you may find that you like.
The only thing you'll need is a mini to RCA splitter from your sound card to the preamp/amp.
You may have to turn off your monitors while listening to headphones though, there doesn't seem to be a output select switch.
