Head over to your local music store and check out some of the lower-end offerings from M-Audio and Mackie. A lot of people around here also recommend the
Audioengine A5s.
Still, you may miss out on some of the bass frequencies if you listen to a lot of low-end heavy material without a subwoofer, which is why it's a tough call.
