The windows equivalent of core audio resamples everything to 48/16. Since this is almost never desirable, it means that anyone that wants something better than that has to go with something else, which requires more work. Specifically, benchmark felt like they had to write their own drivers from the ground up, for example. By using Apple Core Audio and firewire, apogee was able to code to a standard, and have things work exactly the way they wanted without additional effort. It makes a difference. Include 1 chip (firewire support) vs jump through the hoops it takes to get usb sound to sound good on windows.
