There is one thing I have to add to that review.
As for the background noise, it can be largely improved by changing tubes.
Use 5751 for 12AX7 and 12BH7 for 12AU7, because they have lower gain factors.
Get the tubes from a supplier that will select low-noise tubes (as done for phono amp tubes) such as Tube Depot.
Then, surprisingly, there is zero background noise on K501. Even with SR225, which can be driven by portable players, the background noise is just audible. With K1000, the inner resolution becomes breathtaking.
