That Gardiner set is darned cheap! The regular CD Von Karajan '63 set is more expensive in the stores. The Gardiner set is in excess of fifty dollars for me (even with the 10% discount, which is really a 4% discount after Indiana sales tax*) at Barnes and Noble.
Mark is right, though. Good sets at better prices are a winning proposal for anyone. However, EMI's GROTC and DG's Classics series make some of the really neat stuff available at a decent price.
It looks like I'll be buying the Gardiner set at some point. I guess I'll just have to put the Von Karajan Ring and my new hard-drive off for a while.
New signature forthcoming (or not).

A better bad influence is not to be found, though.

The Music Forum regulars are the sort of friend that every knows is a bad influence, but is a heck of a lot of fun at parties, cocktail gatherings, and Trivial Pursuit evenings.
In other words, Head-Fi is the friend who convinces you to mortgage the farm while listening to Mahler's 4th and discussing the relative merits of Boulez and Von Karajan.

That sums it up pretty well. Exciting for relative "newbs" like myself.

Scottder, I hate to say this, but with your collection, post count, and "time served," your not a newbie. You're "one of them" now.

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about all your other interests.

That's how it goes. A symphony or two on occasion, that first harmless set, a second, then a third. Control slips away so easily . . .
[Sees him living under a bridge, Beethoven CDs clutched in a brown paper bag.]
