Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes

The original thread discussing this article is here.   There seems to have been an explosion lately in "audiophile" music players for Mac OS X lately. Though iTunes wiped out the need for competition when it was introduced, it has become a huge, multimedia and store program, leaving many people wanting something simpler.  For a while, that was Play and one or two others, but then Amarra came on the scene. Offering higher-quality playback, it has become famous among audiophiles, alongside its biggest competitor, Pure Vinyl (and now Pure Music).  As those two have fought... read more

STAX SR-007 (Omega II) ... A Review After 4 Years Of Ownership - darth nut's epic review.

[This review was originally posted in 2003 on Head-Fi. Darth nut is a psychoacoustician and his review is considered to be the most epic headphone review ever written. While the detail he goes into psycho acoustics and "headstage" are too overwhelming for most people I believe his write-up would deserve a place in Head-Fi's Hall of Fame, if we had one. I've re-formatted it so it fits in the forum better. -- Currawong.]     STAX SR-007 (OMEGA II) … A REVIEW AFTER 4 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP  A madman is one who ‘hears voices in his head’.  Headphone-user: ‘you... read more

AKG K1000 - A collection of information and links

This is a compendium of K1000 knowledge that was sitting unused in the catacombs of head-fi.  It was originally posted by krmathis and I thought I'd ressurect it here for everyone's benefit.   Original thread here.  Main posts follow:   Here you find information, links to reviews, impressions, recommendations, and more for the AKG K1000 headphone. I have been missing a central place for all this, so I decided to create one. iBasso DX100 FAQ

As there are so many repeat questions in the DX100 thread, yet the thread is growing at an amazing rate, burying the answers, this F.A.Q. on the DX100 has been created.     Firmware:   The latest firmware is available from iBasso.com here  v1.4.2 (ZIP compressed file).   Previous firmware here -- v1.3.7 (ZIP compressed file). You can also find v.1.2.7 from member Sorensiim, (compressed zip here, uncompressed image file here,... read more

Comparisons of the LCD-3 and the LCD-2 Rev. 2

I've spent the better part of two nights going back and forth between these two headphones. Just my personal thoughts made from the notes that I took...two cents as they say....likely worth that.   As a bit of a backdrop, here are my thoughts on the differences between the R1 and R2 LCD-2s:   http://www.head-fi.org/a/comparisons-of-lcd-2-rev-1-and-rev-2     Ergonomics/Aesthetics Both headphones look like they’re part of the same family with some distinctions (kinda like the Baldwin brothers I guess). I prefer the darker wood colour of the LCD-2s, but... read more

Comparisons of LCD-2 Rev. 1 and Rev. 2

With the death of the massive LCD-2 thread, I thought maybe a wiki was a little more appropriate: So I’ve had an evening with both my LCD-2 revisions and here are a few thoughts... Ergonomics/Aesthetics Upon first glance it is very easy to dismiss these two as “identical twins”, but upon closer inspection there are a few subtle differences. First off, the wood on the Rev. 2 is a lighter shade than my older LCD-2s (purchased last September) and the finish of the wood is a little more “polished” and professional in appearance on the newer version. However, I think I... read more

Quick Set Up Guide For Mac Os X And Itunes

If you've just bought a Mac but don't know how to get started, here is a very quick guide to essential settings for ripping CDs and changing the system audio output.   Setting up iTunes for CD ripping:   Open up iTunes. Go into the Preferences (in the iTunes menu). In the Import Settings you want to select either Apple Lossless Encoder or AIFF (the former has smaller file sizes but no loss of music data) and, most importantly, check the box for error correction.     Connecting your DAC:   As for connecting your DAC, you can use USB if available or... read more
