Syncing music and making playlists work with the Astell & Kern AK100 and a Mac

I figured out how to create playlists on my Mac and put them on the AK100. It's a bit of a PITA but it works.   First, I use Markspace Android Sync to copy the iTunes playlists and music I want to my micro SD card. I first set that up to tell it the types of files that can be played, as the default doesn't include m4a, and others. This re-creates the playlists in a folder/directory named Markspace/Playlists on the SD card and puts the music in Markspace/Music.  I open up those playlists in BBEdit and change the paths from "../Music" to "/mnt/SD0/Music" (Note!... read more

Mac OS X Music Players - alternatives to iTunes

The original thread discussing this article is here.   There seems to have been an explosion lately in "audiophile" music players for Mac OS X lately. Though iTunes wiped out the need for competition when it was introduced, it has become a huge, multimedia and store program, leaving many people wanting something simpler.  For a while, that was Play and one or two others, but then Amarra came on the scene. Offering higher-quality playback, it has become famous among audiophiles, alongside its biggest competitor, Pure Vinyl (and now Pure Music).  As those two have fought... read more

STAX SR-007 (Omega II) ... A Review After 4 Years Of Ownership - darth nut's epic review.

[This review was originally posted in 2003 on Head-Fi. Darth nut is a psychoacoustician and his review is considered to be the most epic headphone review ever written. While the detail he goes into psycho acoustics and "headstage" are too overwhelming for most people I believe his write-up would deserve a place in Head-Fi's Hall of Fame, if we had one. I've re-formatted it so it fits in the forum better. -- Currawong.]     STAX SR-007 (OMEGA II) … A REVIEW AFTER 4 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP  A madman is one who ‘hears voices in his head’.  Headphone-user: ‘you... read more

List of lossless and high-res music (FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, DSD, DXD etc.) download sites

People regularly ask about where to buy CD quality or hi-res downloads (legitimately!) so here is a list of sites I know of. Please post a comment if there are any I've missed. Note that they must have music available in a lossless or high-res format available.   Format guide: CD Quality = 16 bit, 44.1 kHz PCM. Hi-res = Any of 24 bit; 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz PCM. DSD = Direct Stream Digital ie: SACD-type files that requires special playback software that can convert the files to PCM on playback or a DAC that can receive the DSD data unchanged. DXD =... read more

mp3tag setup guide

How to use mp3tag to edit and properly tag your music files (Particularly FLAC and mp3 files).       Using mp3 tag to properly clean and edit your tags for both DX100 and Hisound Products (keep in mind this can apply to many other DAPs in general):   The directions below are in large part dealing with the Hisound products but you can use them as well to get your DX100 to properly show tags and music in general. I do not recommend having more than 1 type of tag embedded into the file. I do use ID3V2 though on mp3 files on the DX100 where I want the album art... read more

AKG K1000 - A collection of information and links

This is a compendium of K1000 knowledge that was sitting unused in the catacombs of head-fi.  It was originally posted by krmathis and I thought I'd ressurect it here for everyone's benefit.   Original thread here.  Main posts follow:   Here you find information, links to reviews, impressions, recommendations, and more for the AKG K1000 headphone. I have been missing a central place for all this, so I decided to create one. Hope you find it useful.  Thanks to 'Richter Di' for his 'Everything about the K-1000 (K1000)' thread, which got me thinking about... read more

iBasso DX100 FAQ

As there are so many repeat questions in the DX100 thread, yet the thread is growing at an amazing rate, burying the answers, this F.A.Q. on the DX100 has been created.     Firmware:   The latest firmware is available from iBasso.com here  v1.4.2 (ZIP compressed file).   Previous firmware here -- v1.3.7 (ZIP compressed file). Alternatively, since iBasso.com tends to be down from time to time, member dhobsd keeps a directory containing all release versions here (TX, US). You can also find v.1.2.7 from member Sorensiim, (compressed zip here, uncompressed image file here,... read more

Headphone Buying Guide

((This post will constantly be in a work in progress, the headphone world is constantly changing with new competitors and my goal is to keep this up to date with as much detail as possible. This will be no easy goal and I'm asking your help to correct any information, or add any as needed! A PM will yield best results when looking to change anything here.)) Before reading this thread I want everyone to realize that sound is subjective. Something that one person may find to be a great headphone may in-fact sound terrible to the next person. We all experience sound... read more

Comparisons of the LCD-3 and the LCD-2 Rev. 2

I've spent the better part of two nights going back and forth between these two headphones. Just my personal thoughts made from the notes that I took...two cents as they say....likely worth that.   As a bit of a backdrop, here are my thoughts on the differences between the R1 and R2 LCD-2s:   http://www.head-fi.org/a/comparisons-of-lcd-2-rev-1-and-rev-2     Ergonomics/Aesthetics Both headphones look like they’re part of the same family with some distinctions (kinda like the Baldwin brothers I guess). I prefer the darker wood colour of the LCD-2s, but... read more
